Dispelling OI Myths

There are so many myths related to osteogenesis imperfecta, it can be comical at times. While perusing the OI Foundation website, I noticed a new section dedicated to dispelling OI myths. Check it out, HERE.

What are the OI myths that annoy you the most?

I personally get agitated with the myth that some individuals with OI can outgrow the disorder. I guess I’m not one of the blessed few who outgrew OI.

“Oh, she just needs more calcium” – In response to those who find out my 12-month old has OI Type 1.

I’m still asked (in my late 40s now) if my mother didn’t give me enough milk to drink when I was young. Another myth I heard from a co-worker who is a physical therapist was that it doesn’t hurt as much when our bones break compared to someone without OI…I assured her that I’m in a lot of pain when I break something.
